Research institutions which wish to appoint foreign researchers can have themselves recognised by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Above all, this has the benefit of a speedier issuing of a residency title for the purpose of research.
Note:
Companies which carry out research are also classed as "research institutions".
State or state recognised institutions of higher education or other research institutions whose activities are primarily financed by public funds are already classed as recognised research institutions by law.
A recognition as a research institution is valid for five years and can be extended. Exceptions are possible.

To have your research facility recognised by the BAMF, you have to file an application in writing.
The research facilities are obliged to assume all the costs for a period of six months which arise if a scientist stays in one of the member states of the European Union (EU) without permission after expiry of his/her residence permit.
Facilities, which are mainly financed from public funds, do not have to submit a declaration that they will assume the costs. The same applies for research projects for which there is a particular public interest. You can find more details in the form and also in the leaflet for the assessment application which the BAMF offers as a download on its website.
After your application has been positively checked, the BAMF recognizes the research facility and lists it in a list of the recognised research facilities (Liste der anerkannten Forschungseinrichtungen).
Normally a recognition as a research facility is valid for five years. A renewal is possible.

There is a charge of 219 euros for the recognition of a research facility, whose activities are not mainly financed from public funds.

The researchers, with whom you conclude the hosting agreements, can then apply for residence for research purposes.
